Semi-finalists Dale Castro of Mililani Waena Elementary School and Ann Mahi of Roosevelt High School each received a $2,000 cash award. All 11 nominees received a $1,000 personal cash award at a presentation ceremony in early April.

Rounding out this year's nominees are: Susan Alivado, Paia Elementary; Sherry Kobayashi, Ewa Beach Elementary; Debbie Lindsey, Koloa Elementary; Pauline Masaniai, Kahuku Elementary; Dennis O'Brien, Ernest Bowen deSilva Elementary; Bonnie Tabor, Waikiki Elementary; Suzanne Yamada, Palisades Elementary; and Joe Yamamoto, Maunaloa Elementary.

The Masayuki Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership Award was created to recognize Hawaii's outstanding public school principals and is named in honor of Island Insurance founder, the late Masayuki Tokioka, a graduate of McKinley High School and the first Japanese-American to graduate from Harvard Business School. Our most dynamic principals exhibit leadership in multiple ways through their dedication, creativity, community-building, and entrepreneurial spirit, all qualities Mr. Tokioka possessed. It is our hope that by recognizing these outstanding leaders, their examples will inspire others, so together we can build a brighter future for Hawaii's children.
