Burglary and Theft Protection

Burglary Safety Tips

  • Don’t post your family name on your mailbox or on your house. A burglar can call directory assistance to obtain your number and call to confirm if you are not home.
  • If you have glass panels near or in doors, make sure glass is reinforced so they cannot be shattered. Secure sliding doors with wooden dowels or use a “charley bar” to block the door closed.
  • If you are installing a security system, make sure it includes a loud inside alarm, detectors at all exterior doors and motion sensors in the main living areas. Posting security system decals and signs are also an effective deterrent.

Holiday Home Safety Tips

  • During the holidays, don’t openly display your Christmas tree and gifts in the front window. It is too tempting for burglars to smash the window and grab the wrapped packages.
  • After the holidays, do not pile up empty gift boxes (such as computer or electronic equipment boxes) on the street for the garbage collection. This gives burglars a hint that there is expensive equipment in your home. Instead, break down the boxes or cut them up.
  • If you are planning to travel during the holidays, don’t leave descriptive messages on your answering machine stating that you are not home. This gives burglars plenty of time to break in and completely ransack your home.

Auto Safety Tips

  • Park with your wheels turned towards the curb and always use your emergency brakes when parking. Wheels should also be turned to the side in driveways and parking lots. This makes it tough for your car to be towed.
  • Mark your vehicle with a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) etched on your car window and major parts or drop your business card, address label or other I.D. inside a vehicle door. This will help police identify your vehicle in the event it is stolen. Engrave expensive accessories such as car stereos, cellular phones, etc. with personal I.D. numbers so thieves will have difficulty disposing of them.
  • If you are leaving your vehicle unattended for an extended period, disable your vehicle by removing the electronic ignition fuse, coil wire or rotor distributor.
