Island Insurance Board of Directors appoints John Schapperle, Chief Executive Officer
Island Insurance, Hawaii’s largest locally owned property & casualty insurance carrier, has appointed John Schapperle as Chief Executive Officer. Schapperle will continue his current responsibilities as President. He succeeds Colbert Matsumoto who will remain as Executive Chairman of the Board.
“As President, John has guided Island to many accomplishments that have resulted in being recognized not only in Hawaii, but on a national stage as well,” said Colbert M. Matsumoto, Executive Chairman of the Board of Island Insurance. “We are confident he will continue to build on that success in his expanded role as Chief Executive Officer.”

Schapperle has more than 40 years experience in the property and casualty insurance industry including personal and commercial lines, carrier and agency, insurance and reinsurance experience. Prior to joining Island Insurance in 2004, he was Vice President of RLI Insurance, a national specialty insurance company. His experience also includes INA Special Risk, Continental Insurance and Allstate Insurance.
Schapperle earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania and is a designated Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). He is a member of the Board of Directors of Island Insurance Companies, the Island Insurance Foundation, Hawaii Employers Council, Asia Pacific Risk and Insurance Association and the Property & Casualty Insurers Executive Advisory Committee. He is also Board Chairman of the Hawaii Property Insurance Association.
