Teach For America receives $10,000 donation from the Island Insurance Foundation

HONOLULU - The Island Insurance Foundation donated $10,000 to Teach For America-Hawaii, in support of the nonprofit's work in high-need communities. In a presentation ceremony at Palolo Elementary School, a $10,000 donation was presented to Teach For America-Hawaii Executive Director Jill Baldemor by Tyler Tokioka, President of the Island Insurance Foundation.

Teach For America recruits, trains and supports recent college graduates and professionals who commit to teach in under-resourced communities and gain the foundational experience for a lifetime of educational leadership and advocacy. The organization has partnered with schools in Hawaii since 2006 and currently supports approximately 180 teachers who will collectively impact over 12,000 students this school year.

The Island Insurance Foundation donation will support the training and ongoing leadership development of teachers and program alumni dedicated to working alongside community efforts to ensure that all students have the educational opportunities they deserve. Teach For America-Hawaii corps members are public school teachers in more than 50 schools on Oahu and the Big Island serving populations and communities from Native Hawaiian Homesteads to military bases and charter schools. This is the sixth year the foundation has donated to Teach For America-Hawaii.

Teach For America is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates and professionals who commit to teaching for two years in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity. Today, more than 11,000 corps members are teaching in 48 regions across the country while nearly 32,000 Teach For America alumni continue working from inside and outside the field of education for the fundamental changes necessary to ensure educational excellence and equity.
