Island Insurance Foundation Donates Over $1 Million to Hawaii Non-Profits in 2021

The Island Insurance Foundation, the charitable arm of Island Insurance and one of the top 25 most active private foundations in the state, donated over $1 million to Hawaii non-profit organizations in 2021.

Over $250,000 was donated to Aloha United Way, Helping Hands Hawaii, Hawaii Community Foundation, Hawaii Foodbank, Meals on Wheels and other local non-profits providing economic relief and social support to the community during this prolonged pandemic.

Donations to support critical healthcare organizations including the Blood Bank of Hawaii, American Heart Association, Kapiolani Health Foundation, Queen’s Medical Center and the UH Cancer Center totaled nearly $200,000 in 2021.

The Foundation also donated over $400,000 to support cultural and arts organizations that helped enrich the lives of residents restricted from usual community gatherings, activities and celebrations because of the pandemic. These organizations include Hawaii Public Radio, Hawaii International Film Festival, Manoa Heritage Center, Hawaii United Okinawan Association, Hawaii Youth Symphony, Kumu Kahua Theatre, Downtown Arts Center and the Daihozan Chozen-Ji Zen temple.

“As the pandemic continues to affect so many in the community, it is more important than ever to support Hawaii’s non-profit sector,” said Dana Tokioka, Island Insurance Foundation President. “They make a difference to so many lives, not only through the critical services they provide, but also in the tens of thousands of people that are directly employed by the organizations.”

The Island Insurance Foundation also committed $250,000 to the University of Hawaii Foundation in support of RISE, a world-class innovation-and-entrepreneurship center coupled with student housing being built across from the flagship UH Manoa campus. The live-learn-work community at RISE – Residences for Innovative Student Entrepreneurs – will be operated by the Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship, or PACE, at the UH Manoa Shidler College of Business.

“We greatly appreciate Island Insurance’s long-standing support and generous gift as we expand to serve more students and our community,” said Susan Yamada, vice chair of the PACE Board of Directors. In addition to the UH RISE gift, nearly $200,000 was donated to other local youth educational organizations including Teach for America Hawaii, Purple Maia Foundation, After-School All-Stars Hawaii, Lanai High & Elementary School and St. Andrew’s School.

The Island Insurance Foundation is the charitable arm of Island Insurance, Hawaii’s only locally owned and managed property and casualty insurance carrier. Since 2003, the Foundation has donated nearly $11.5 million to a wide array of non-profit organizations across Hawaii and is recognized as one of the top 25 most active private foundations in Hawaii.

Founded in downtown Honolulu, Island Insurance has been serving Hawaii’s families and businesses for over 80 years. Island Insurance is the only Hawaii-based company to be recognized as a Top 50 property & casualty insurer in the nation by the Ward Group for 14 consecutive years. It holds a financial strength rating of “A” (Excellent) from A.M. Best Company. For more information, visit
