Fire Extinguishers

The National Fire Protection Association recommends each home carry a portable fire extinguisher which can save lives and property by putting out or containing a small fire until the fire department arrives.

To operate a fire extinguisher remember the word PASS:

  • Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher that keeps the handle from being accidentally pressed. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle.
  • Aim the nozzle low towards the base of the fire.
  • Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly. Stand approximately 8 feet away from the fire and squeeze the handle to discharge the extinguisher. If you release the handle, the discharge will stop.
  • Sweep the nozzle back and forth at the base of the fire. After the fire appears to be out, watch it carefully since it may reignite.

  • Select a multi-purpose extinguisher for your home that can be used on all types of home fires and is large enough to put out a small fire. Make sure you choose a fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory.
  • It is recommended to have at least one fire extinguisher on each floor of your home. Also, keep them in plain sight and no more than five feet above the floor. The most important places to have a fire extinguisher are in areas that are more susceptible to fire. These areas are the kitchen and the garage.
  • Check you fire extinguisher at least once a month to make sure it is fully charged and not leaking by checking the pressure dial.
  • When you use the device, keep your back to a clear exit so you can make an easy escape if the fire cannot be controlled. If the room fills with smoke, leave immediately.
