Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need auto insurance in Hawaii?

Hawaii State law requires that vehicles be insured throughout the motor vehicle registration period and that drivers carry valid proof of auto insurance (motor vehicle insurance ID card) while driving. Not meeting these requirements may result in fines and/or jail time.

What are the Hawaii automobile insurance coverage requirements in Hawaii?

All Hawaii drivers are required to maintain at least the minimum amount of car insurance coverage below:

  • $20,000 per person/$40,000 per accident bodily injury liability

  • $10,000 per person personal injury protection

If I’d like additional protection, what auto coverages are available?

For more protection, drivers can increase coverage limits and opt for additional auto coverages like Collision, Other Than Collision, etc.

  • Collision Coverage – You may add Collision Coverage to pay the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle in the event of an auto accident, minus the amount of your deductible. Collision Coverage protects against your vehicle’s collision with another vehicle or an object, like a guardrail or a tree.
  • Other Than Collision Coverage – Other Than Collision Coverage is an optional coverage that can cover direct and accidental losses to your car by incidents such as fire, theft, vandalism, and broken windshields.
  • Collision and Other Than Collision Coverages are important for owners of:
    • Vehicles that are being leased or financed
    • Newer vehicles that would be expensive to replace
  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage – Uninsured Motorist Coverage protects you and others if injured in an accident with an at-fault driver who doesn’t carry liability insurance.
  • Underinsured Motorist Coverage – Underinsured Motorist Coverage protects you and others when injured in an accident with an at-fault driver whose liability limits are too low to cover the damages.
